Root River Trail

The Root River Trail runs from Fountain to Houston, MN (42 miles). It is a nicely paved trail, most of which is former rail bed. Lanesboro is a popular starting or destination point. This quaint town has several interesting places to eat and/or have dessert. (Note: there are no franchise fast food places!!!!). We have done the trail from The Barn Resort / Campground to Fountain, to Preston, to Lanesboro and on to Whalan. On this particular trip we started on the east end just outside of Houston. The trail will have a very nice trailhead in Houston soon, but as of 7/7/01, it was not yet finished and the trail out of Houston still had not been paved. There are 2 good-sized hills on the trail into Houston where the trail leaves the railbed. Sections of the trail from Houston to Rushford have washed out several times in the past few years. The entire Root River Trail is worth riding.

We started just outside of Houston at the iron bridge on a warm, muggy Saturday. Ted’s sister Joan and husband, Patrick joined us with their new Easy Rider recumbent bikes. The trail meanders through woods along the river as well as through fields.

The trail through Rushford, also was not complete, but it is fairly easy to find your way through the town. The original Train Depot is being used as a trailhead (parking is available here). There are other historical buildings here as well. Peterson is another small town the trail runs through.

We rode through a heavy rain between Peterson and Whalan. Knowing that pie was waiting for us at the “World Famous Pie” shop, we kept riding. They also have sandwiches, but the pies are all home-made and there are usually many wonderful choices. After filling our tummies, and drying out a bit, we headed back. We stopped in Peterson for a quick picture break on our way back. Notice Patrick’s stripe - fenders will be the next addition to Joan and Patrick’s bikes.
