Bike Wisconsin: SAGBRAW 2004 To the Start

We took the Bus From Port Washington to Marinette

This year SAGBRAW followed the same route as in 2002. It is a beautiful route with only a few hills to worry about. Considering the cold, rainy spring we had, which limited our training, we felt this would again be a good route for us. Bubba was not available for the Pampered Zone, so we brought our tent and did our own setup.

As in past years, we elected for the bus shuttle to get our bikes to the start. We drove to Menasha, WI on Saturday to see Ted’s mom and spend the night. We drove to Port Washington on Sunday morning. Our bikes were loaded into the semi and we climbed aboard a coach bus for the 3 hour trip to Marienette. Once there, we gathered our bags and setup our tents. The tent city went up quickly as the busses came in, with everyone trying to find shade. Here’s our tent - our home for the next week. We rented 2 chairs for the week. It is amazing how something a simple as a chair can make life more comfortable. We mingled in the area for a while, then decided to ride one of the shuttle busses. The driver played tour guide, pointing out all the good restaurants, historic buildings and even the local funeral home. We checked out the local logging museum and marveled at the equipment used. The semis arrived with the bikes around 4pm. Everyone scrambled to find their semi and their bike.
The bikes are wrapped in padded blankets. There are two levels in each trailer. The tandems and recumbents are usually on the bottom and the standard bikes are on the upper and bottom levels. Every type of bike imaginable can be seen on this ride. Here is recumbent tandem. We also saw a bike for 3 riders on the ride. A 5 year old was on the middle seat, complete with clipless shoes! The Railhouse restaurant was running a shuttle to their establishment, so we headed there for dinner. They have learned over time how taxing all the bikers can be on their wait staff, so this year they put on a buffet dinner in the backroom. Food was good, and Ted says the beer was good as well. He was a little disappointed that he was not able to order a sampler of beer - they were out of the glasses/trays used for the samplers.
