Day 1

Monday August 5th - Marinette to Green Bay

Monday we found out the true meaning of "flat". That was truly amazing. I have never seen a road that flat for that long. The largest (and only?) hill was an over pass. Take into account a 5-10 mph tailwind and you have a pretty easy day (except for entering Green Bay).

Has anybody else ever had that flat of a road (besides a desert).

Robin has finally found a way to handle her long hair with the bike helmet. Braids with the ends stuck into the top vents of her helmet help keep her hair out of the way and she stays cool on those hot days. Many people commented on the hairstyle (it is a bit unusual). Robin started explaining that the braids were her safety straps in the event the chin straps failed.   Robin and Joan give a “thumbs up” on the road. We have started our journey and are headed for Green Bay - 65.7 miles down the road. Ted is showing his creative photographic skills - he is riding his bike and shooting Joan in his rear view mirror. Robin is in front of him.

Our route takes us along nicely paved back, country roads. Robin and Joan are leading a small group of riders down this country road. This day had no hills that any of us could remember. It was a gentle downhill grade the whole day. To make it better, we had a tailwind. Temps were in the mid-70’s. A perfect day for biking.   Everyone has smile on their face this day. We arrive at Preble High School in Green Bay after a very hectic ride through the downtown area. The school grounds are NOT flat. There are 3 terraced levels. We picked a spot on the 2nd terrace with a view of the parking lot. The bags laid out in the lot are for those people who have not yet come in to pick up their bags. This collection probably represents about ˝ of the bags that the 2 moving vans move. We are limited to 2 bags per person, so we don’t have many extras. Notice the clothes line in this shot. Ted rigged this up from the poles of an old tent we had. Since we are usually camped on football and/or soccer fields, there are not a lot of places to hang towels and clothes to dry, so we bring our own clothes line.

Joan and Robin take a few minutes to relax after having cleaned up from the day’s ride. Robin is in the chair that Ted “rented” for the week. It may sound silly, but Joan and Robin looked forward to when he was not around so they could steal a few minutes in a real chair.

Where do you want to go next?
