The Bus Ride From Port Washington to Marinette, Wisconsin

2002 is the 25th Anniversary year for this trip and they chose the wonderful Door County area of Wisconsin for us to tour. This is Ted and Robin’s 3rd year of doing SAGBRAW and Ted’s sister, Joan’s 4th year. We all agreed that this was the best year yet.

If you have any questions or comments for us, drop us an e-mail, we'd love to hear from you and share our excitement. Robin@tarsk.com or Ted@tarsk.com

We start by picking up our registration packets in the barn. This contains the bike tag, baggage tags, our wrist bands, cue sheets and maps, and event T-shirt. Lots of reading material for the bus trip! We started at what would be the end of the trip in Port Washington. Here we loaded our 3 recumbent bikes into one of the six moving vans that were used to transport the bikes to Marinette where we would start our 350 mile bike trip. They pack the vans with two layers of bikes. We line up at a van, then one by one the bikes are loaded and covered with their own packing blanket. The recumbents and tandems are on the bottom layer of this van and regular bikes lifted to the upper layer.

Many of us paid extra for the coach bus ride to Marinette. Our bags go on the bus with us. As soon as a bus is full it leaves for our destination. Our bus driver was a bit of a tour guide and took a bit of a detour in Green Bay to drive by Lambeau Field. Once in Marinette, we choose our camping spot at Marinette High School and set up our tents for the night. Our bikes will not arrive for several hours. We find a spot with a bit of shade and hop a shuttle bus to town to get some lunch.
Each over-night spot turns into a “tent city”. This picture shows the view of tents in front of the school. There are more tents behind the school and on each side of the school. Most of the 1200 bikers camp in tents, but some will “camp” in the gym of the school. We don’t have any pictures of the gyms this year, if you want to get an idea of what that looks like, check out our pictures for 2001 and 2000. Robin and Ted ready to start the trip (or least they hope they are). Our training for this year was different from the previous years. We did not have as many long (50 miles or longer) rides. But we did ride frequently during the week. Robin commuted the 10 miles to work 3 to 4 days a week starting in May. Ted worked out a 10 -12 mile “training” route that he rode many mornings before work. Both of us had hills included in our regular rides and have finally learned to not dread the hills as much.
